Adele yang juga dikenal luas karena lagu hitsnya Someone Like You Dalam menulis lagu Skyfall berkolaborasi dengan Paul Epworth.

Lagu ini sendiri direkam Adele di studio Abbey Road, London, dengan dukungan orkestra. Adele menuturkan, ia memutuskan untuk membawakan lagu tema film James Bond setelah jatuh cinta dengan skenario Skyfall. "Awalnya, saya agak ragu terlibat dengan lagu tema untuk Skyfall. Ada banyak sorotan langsung dan tekanan ketika menyangkut lagu Bond," ujar Adele.
